Mattress Do's & Dont's

Do's and Don'ts of Bedding Care

Do rotate your mattress as needed.

Do use the compliant foundation or box spring.

Do use the appropriate frame and center support.

Do let your new mattress air out upon removal of plastic packaging.

Do keep your bedding clean and use a protective mattress cover.

Don't expose bedding to fire or place near open flame. All sets purchased from Star are flame retardant, but not fireproof.

Don't remove the "law" tag at the end of the mattress, as this is the identification needed to establish your warranty rights.

Don't place a board between your mattress and foundation. This will diminish the longevity and performance of your sleep set, may void the warranty and may reduce the flame retardant qualities of the sleep set.

Mattress Use & Care

Breaking In Your New Mattress

Just like a new pair of shoes, a new mattress will conform to your body over time. As you sleep in the same basic location on your mattress every night, a certain amount of compression will occur. This is completely normal for modern mattresses, which have a high number of "comfort layers." It is not uncommon to see a ridge or hump down the middle. If you want to reduce the ridge, you can compress the padding layers there by sleeping in the middle of your mattress.

Rotating Your Mattress

To increase the comfort and durability of your mattress, we recommend you rotate your mattress on a regular basis. For the first two months, rotate your mattress every two weeks. After that, rotate your mattress once every three months. (If you have a foam mattress, you can rotate it less often, as sleep indentations are less likely).

Body Impressions

A body impression in the mattress may look like sagging — but there's a big difference. Today's resilient materials are designed to conform to the sleeper's individual contours. The appearance of a body impression rarely means there is a structural defect. It simply indicates the comfort layers are settling and conforming, as they should. The load supporting ability of the comfort layers does not change as a result of this settling process.

New Mattress Smell

Just like a new car, your mattress may have that "new" smell. Before putting on your bed linens, let your new sleep set air out for a few hours upon removal from the plastic packaging.

Adjustment Period

Normally it takes your body several weeks to become accustomed to the feel and support of your new mattress set. The new materials in the comfort layers may also take a little time to conform. Because your new mattress is offering proper support, it is not uncommon to experience some back discomfort while your body adjusts to your new mattress.

Flame Retardant Qualities

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's mattress open-flame standard (16 CFR Part 16) became effective July 1, 2007. It covers mattresses and foundations manufactured on or after that date. This standard makes a significant contribution to product safety. Every premium bedding set sold by Star Furniture since mid-2004 has complied with these standards. To ensure conformity and the inherent improvement in safety, every new mattress should be used either by itself or with a compliant foundation (or box spring) manufactured on or after July 1, 2007. Failure to use as suggested may reduce the fire retardant rating of the bedding.

Frame/Center Support

Always use a strong, stable mattress foundation. Today's mattress sets are heavier and require a center support to provide the proper level of support to comply with most manufacturers' warranties. In beds with wood slats, three to five slats should be used with the slats having a support leg that extends to the floor. For situations where a metal bed frame is used (free standing or with a headboard), there should be a rigid center support on all Queen, King and Cal-King frames.

Protecting Your Investment

We strongly recommend that you protect your investment with a new mattress covering. Star's premium mattress protectors are hypo-allergenic, anti-microbial, waterproof, breathable, soft, quiet, flexible and washable. They will protect a mattress for ten years. Note: Most manufacturers' warranties will be voided if the mattress is deemed unsanitary. The mattress protector guarantee will step in to protect your mattress investment if this happens.
