Levels of Comfort

Soft

Soft is ideal for individuals looks for a mattress that offers support yet feels like you're sleeping on a cloud. You may hear the phrases "Pillow Top", "Super Pillow Top", "Euro Top", or "Ultra Plush". Soft mattresses cradle you in comfort. While they have support like the firm and medium mattresses, soft mattresses also have many layers of soft fibers and foam sewn into the surface. A soft mattress feels like you have added several comforters on a firm bed.

Medium

There are a variety of sub-types of medium mattresses that describe an "in-between" firm and soft mattress. You might even hear the word "Plush". However, a regular medium mattress usually has a thick upholstery layer of soft foam that softens the top of the mattress while the remaining upholstery is firmer foam to give the mattress a very solid, firm comfort-feel. This could be a good choice for those that sleep primarily on their back, as well as primarily stomach sleepers. Side sleepers should try a slightly softer mattress.

Firm

Firm is the hardest of all the comfort levels. The phrases "Plush Firm", "Luxury Firm", "Extra Firm" fall into this category. The firm mattress could be a good choice for sleepers that often lie on their backs. Side sleepers should think twice before choosing an extra firm mattress. Sleeping with your shoulder or arm in-between your body on this type of mattress can reduce circulation and cause a limb to go numb and inhibit a good night's sleep.
