Decorating your home is all about showcasing your unique style and creating a space that feels right for you. That said, following general interior design principles can help you make smart decorating decisions. In today’s blog, the experts at Star Furniture discuss how to hang a picture like an interior designer to help give your home a polished, curated look.

How High to Hang Pictures?

One of the biggest mistakes people make when hanging photos and other artwork is hanging them too high. In fact, the general rule of thumb is to hang your art so that the middle of the frame is 57 inches from the floor, which is roughly eye level for the average person.

How High to Hang a Picture with 10 Foot Ceilings?

If you have particularly high ceilings, you may consider utilizing some space above the typical 57-inch mark, however, many interior designers still recommend that height for best results.

How High to Hang a Picture Behind Furniture?

When you’re hanging artwork behind a sofa, a bed, or another piece of furniture, the frame should be between 7-10 inches above the top of the furniture.

How High to Hang a Gallery Wall?

When hanging a gallery wall, these same measurements will be important. If you're hanging a gallery wall on a bare wall, for example, you’ll likely want the center of your arrangement to hang about 57 inches above the floor. If you’re hanging a gallery wall above a piece of furniture, you’ll likely want the bottom of your lowest frame to hang 7-10 inches from the top of your furniture.

How to Hang Multiple Pictures on a Wall?

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all configuration for hanging multiple pictures on the wall. That said, there are some tips you can follow to make your walls look like they were designed by an interior designer.

Before you hang multiple pictures on a wall, you’ll want to do some planning. To start, find somewhere in your home with a lot of floor space. Try arranging the photos in different configurations on the ground. This will give you a better idea of how the images will look once they’re hanging.

Regardless of how many pictures you’re hanging, you’ll likely want to leave between 3 to 6 inches between each piece. The largest image is typically placed in the center of the arrangement.

If you’re hanging multiple pictures above furniture, your artwork should relate space-wise to your furniture. In other words, if you’re hanging pictures behind a couch, you’ll want to center the images with the couch and make sure they fill about 2/3 of the couch’s width.
