Susan has been an interior designer at Star Furniture since 1991. She is a graduate of the University of Texas, and is licensed in the state of Texas, with more than 30 years of design experience.

Susan's main objective is to create a pleasing environment that makes her clients happy and proud of their home. She is an "idea expert" and has the experience needed to solve any design issue.

"To begin, I find out what my client's goals are, what is important to them. My approach is to make it easy to get the finished room that they will enjoy for many years,"McDermott says.

"I design in layers: The base layer is the wood & furniture - the next layer is color. This is more difficult for some clients, but it's fun helping them discover individual pattern and color tolerances they didn't even know that had! The last layer, accessories, finalizes the prior foundation layers. My client finishes her/his room with the confidence that it reflects their personality," McDermott says.

I enjoy doing a wide variety of styles and learning from my clients A few years back, an overseas client preferred small-scale and sparse furniture arrangements. We walked through our showroom during the "big furniture era," navigating to smaller scale pieces that pleased her. To this day I tell her she was on the forefront of the new retro furniture movement seen today in contemporary decorating."
